I was unprepared for live TV, so I built myself a newsroom

My first episode as co-host, I had opinions. My father had thirty years of stories. On live TV, that’s not a fair fight.

My lane on the show is the global view: international media, tech, social media, and the generation everyone loves to complain about. He introduced me on air as his ustad in that area, which is a generous thing to say and a terrifying thing to live up to.

So I stopped showing up with opinions

I built a research desk that works while I sleep:

• Two full briefings a day, with explainers and points I can deliver in under forty seconds
• A review after the show that transcribes the episode and tells me, bluntly, what landed and what didn’t
• A daily lesson on geopolitics, delivered to my phone

What changed

Every point I make now carries one concrete thing: a number, a precedent, a story. I started defending Gen Z on air, with facts, and it became one of the most argued-about parts of the show.

The lesson I keep relearning: if you feel underqualified, build the thing that makes you qualified.
